Our on-line Permanent Magnet supplies store (http://xf-magnet.com) consists largely of neodymium rare earth magnets with 150 sizes of discs, cylinders (rods), blocks (rectangles), squares, cubes and rings. Their uses vary from tripping sensors, holding or lifting objects and even levitation. All of our rare permanent magnets are magnetized through their thickness; we do not offer diametrically magnetized magnets.
Ferrite magnets are weaker but more economical. They are particularly good for building magnetic sweepers, among other things, where overall size is important. Our ferrite ceramic magnets come mainly in blocks along with a limited range of discs. Most of the ferrite magnets, like the permanent rare earth magnets, are magnetized through their thickness.
We also supply ferrite bar magnets specifically for educational use. These differ from our other permanent magnets in having their poles are at their ends which are painted red & blue and stamped "N" & "S" respectively.
These bar magnets are relatively weak and are intended for use with compasses and iron filings to show the shape of magnetic fields similar to that of Earth. They are also ideal for simple demonstrations of attraction and repulsion.
